How to Tell

The first step in getting help is to want to get help

It is also the hardest these are way that you can tell you parents, garudians or counsler that you need to get help. Sooner or later you have to tell your loved one, here is some advice on how to do so:

Do:

  • Make sure you are ready for all reactions. You may be called names; punished, forced to do things you are not ready for, or you may just be ignored.
  • Stay calm
  • Write down what you are going to say
  • Practice in the mirror
  • Find a good time and place to tell
  • And always make sure you are safe!!!

Don’t:

  • Tell them on a holiday
  • Tell then during a family meal or get together
  • Expect everyone to understand
  • Tell younger children who will not understand
  • Get upset if someone does not ‘get it’
  • Cut in front of anyone

Your loved one will more than likely be upset and scared but if they truly love you they will come around, they will try to help. It may take a lot of explaining so be sure that you are ready. It is much better to tell them on your own then for them to find out.
